Historically, the fort has protected the strait between Pelješac peninsula and the island of Korčula from potential attacks. Due to its rich history and similarity to the famous walls of Dubrovnik, the city of Korčula is often called the little Dubrovnik. The most important sights of the city are the cathedral of Saint Mark, built in the Romanesque-Gothic style from the beginning of the 14th century to the beginning of the 19th century, a Franciscan monastery from the 15th century with a beautiful cloister, the palace of Venetian governors, the city hall, the palaces of merchant aristocrats from the 15th and 16th centuries as well as historic city walls and towers. We recommend a visit to one of the biggest attractions of the city of Korčula, the tower of Veliki Revelin, which was built in 1485. You can climb on top of the tower and enjoy attractive views of the old town of Korčula. Inside the old town walls is the birthplace of a famous seafarer and merchant Marco Polo who was born in 1254.
