Although today Lubenice has only 24 inhabitants, due to its excellent strategic location, the village has been inhabited for more than 4,000 years. Numerous tumuli from the Iron and Bronze age, as well as amphorae, money, and jewelry from ancient times, witness the rich history of Lubenice. In the summer, Lubenice becomes the center of the island of Cres during traditional festival Lubenice music evenings. A bronze Greek statue of Apoxyomenos, 192 cm tall, shows an athlete of perfect proportions who cleans a scraper. The statue is on the original bronze pedestal, and today there are only 8 similar statues in the world. According to experts, the Apoxyomenos was made in the 1st or 2nd century BC and the statue is completely preserved. Although the author is unknown, the quality of the statue indicates that the author was very skilled. The statue was found in 1996 near the island of Vela Orjula at a depth of 40...

After the restoration, the statue of Apoxyomenos was originally exhibited at the Archaeological museum in Zagreb and has occasionally been borrowed to renowned world museums, including Louvre in Paris. Today, the statue of Apoxyomenos is permanently located in the museum of Apoxyomenos in Mali Lošinj in the palace of Kvarner from 19th century. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm (last entry is possible until 4 pm). Adult ticket prices range from 50 - 75 kunas (7 to 10 euros).
