The basilica was built in the 6th century during the rule of emperor Justinian I and bishop Euphrasius I after whom it was named. Over the centuries, the basilica was upgraded and got characteristics of different architectural styles. Today's appearance is largely characterized by Gothic style, built between the 13th and 15th centuries. One of the greatest treasures of the basilica are the mosaics of Christ, the martyrs and the Virgin Mary on the throne, which despite many earthquakes and fires have remained preserved until today. The interior of the basilica is painted with biblical motifs, of which Saint Mauro, a patron of the town, is particularly significant for the city of Poreč. Besides the church, the basilica system includes several buildings including the baptistery, the sacristy, the bell tower, Mauro's oratory, and the bishop's court. It is possible to visit the church every day and the admission fee is 40 kuna (about 5.5 euros) for adults. We recommend climbing to the top of the bell tower, from where you can enjoy beautiful views of Poreč.
